All
life begins with a meeting of two. In my work I allow the synthetic
to meet the organic.
The
suspended animation of growth, organic or creative, helps us to
understand structure. But the witnessing of growth, be it nature
or human creativity, can inspire. From this understanding and
inspiration a new faith, philosophy or truth may be born.
Modern
faith, while maintaining a belief system rooted in mankind's history,
has become a matrix - a cross-pollination - of technological and
sociological, even physical, structure.
The
Baroque period in Central Europe was a pinnacle of secular / religious
architecture. Spreading their beliefs in God and faith, Catholic
societies in this period built massive cathedrals, gilded in gold,
with intricately detailed interior decor. The religion displayed
its faith in physical form. Loosely translated, Baroque means
"False Jewel". True to this translation, Baroque style
centered on art that synthesized nature and ornamentation. It
was this synthesis that created "False Jewels."
My
work deals with the potential of life - revealed in a seed, a
portal, an opening, a beginning - recognizing the sacred inside
all of us. The "False Jewels" I create advocate neither
a modesty towards nature nor any religious denomination. They
are the growth of a new modern doctrine and a construct of our
human origin. They are seeds, portals, openings, beginnings.
This
is synthetic nature; this is life.
